The organizational structure of GEO includes the Plenary as the main decision making component, where each Member Country has a voice. The Participating Organizations are also represented in the Plenary and have the right to speak there. The Executive Committee has twelve members representing the different geographical regions. The GEO Secretariat is responsible for the day-to-day operations and is supposed to support the Plenary, the Executive Committee and the other GEO Committees in their work. Currently, GEO has four Committees that carry out a major part of the work, namely, the User Interface Committee (UIC), the Science and Technology Committee (STC), the Architecture and Data Committee (ADC), and the Capacity Building Committee (CBC). Under the UIC, a number of so-called Communities of Practice (CoPs) have been identified or established. Most of the CoP derived from existing IGOS Theme teams, but some CoP such as the ones on Forests and Energy aggregated newly under the UIC.
